Abstract

Introduction: Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing therapies in the world today. In college women in Korea, about 82.6% of them complained that menstrual pains during menstruation. Many women cadet suffered a menstrual pain. Aromatherapy is one of natural curing methods using essential oil from plants, which is composed of various natural ingredients. The purpose of study to provide alleviating effect of menstrual pain when aromatherapy is applied to women cadets.

Methods: This study was designed to verify the effect of aromatherapy on menstrual pains and dysmenorrhea by a quasi experiment (nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design), from April to June, 2003. The subjects of this experiment consisted of 46 cadet women with menstrual pains of over six score by Visual Analogue Scale. Also they didn¡¯t have any systematic or reproductive disease and didn¡¯t use contraceptive drugs. They were randomized. They are 26 for the experimental group and 20 for the control group. Their mean age was 19.2 years, mean height 163.0 Cm, mean weight 56.0 Kg, mean menacheal age 12.7 years, mean menstrual period 28.7 days, mean menstrual duration 5.8 days, mean menstrual pains (VAS) 6.98. As treatment, aromatherapy was given for the experimental group. Aromatherapy was to give effleurrage of abdomen with aroma oil. The following oil mix utilized: six drops lavender (Lavendula augustifolia), six drops clary sage (savia sclarea), one drop rose (Rosa Damascena) and two drop marjoram (Origanum majorana). This treatment essential oil was diluted with almond oil as carrier oil by 3%. The experimental group. The control group did not give any treatment. Group selections procedure randomized. Data collection included menstrual pains, the severity of dysmenorrhea. Menstrual pains, the severity of dysmenorrhea, general and menstrual characteristics of subjects were measured the first day of pre menstrual period before treatment (pre-test), menstrual pains and the severity of dysmenorrhea were measured the first and second day of post menstrual period after treatment (posttest). Data was analyzed by ANOVA, X2- test, Repeated measures ANOVA, Cronbach¡¯s ¥á with SPSS win Program.

Results: A menstrual pain was significantly low in the experimental group on the first and second day of menstrual period after treatment respectively (P = .000)(P = .000). The severity of dysmenorrhea was no significant.

Conclusions: In conclusion, these findings indicate that aromatherapy with lavender, clary sage, rose, majoram could be effective to decrease menstrual pains. So, aromatherapy could be applied to as a nursing treatment for cadet women suffering with menstrual pains.
